eMolecules Plus Chemical Search Engine Now Integrated with CISPro Global and CISProLive

Integration of eMolecules Plus Chemicals Database with ChemSW’s CISPro Inventory System Streamlines Chemical Buying and Management Processes

ChemSW has just signed a partnership agreement with eMolecules Inc, the provider of the world’s most efficient chemical structures search engine, that integrates CISPro Global and CISProLive with a new web services version of eMolecules’ popular Chemical Search Engine known as eMolecules Web Service.

eMolecules Plus is the only chemical search solution that combines a robust chemical structures database of more than 5.5M unique commercially-available chemical structures from the most important chemical suppliers with a one-stop chemical compound procurement system. When integrated with CISPro, Chemists, Lab Managers, Purchasing Managers, and EH&S professionals can now stay within the CISPro environment to search for available chemicals and compounds, order materials, and have the purchase record ready to speed receipt, thus eliminating the need to create another material record.

Best Practices Tip for the Month

Leverage Cost and Time Savings to Drive Successful Chemical Inventory Management

Using the Right Type of Laboratory Chemical Inventory System Can Optimize Inventory Management and Reduce Costs

Manage Chemical Costs More Efficiently

Chemical purchases and management are often perceived as being a small percentage of overall operating costs, while in reality they can have a significant impact. Lack of information on chemical usage affects the ability to manage chemical costs efficiently, leading to underestimating the resources required. For instance, if chemical in existing inventory can’t be found, then more must be ordered. If misplaced chemicals are found after expiration, they must be discarded, resulting in wasted inventory. And, chemicals that are not retested in a timely manner before expiration must also be discarded. Discards increase expenditures.

Take Control of Chemical Management

Taking control of chemical management with a shared, real-time inventory solution that uses bar-codes to ensure accuracy, provides quick access to in-house materials. Users know what’s in stock and where to get it. Management knows how fast materials are being used and what they cost. Accounting knows when to order more and how much. It sounds so easy and straightforward, and it should be, but certain things need to occur to make this shared inventory solution work. For starters, chemical management requires basic compliance: the system must be used the way it is supposed to be used.

Deploy Time-Saving Software Solutions

Successful chemical inventory solutions deliver a system that’s easy to use and easy to integrate with other systems in the organization. Users shouldn’t need to go through hoops to pull items from inventory. Training should be minimal; an easy to use system is one that doesn’t require much training, is easy to remember how to use, and takes only a few hours to learn. Above all, keep in mind that the right software saves time. Electronic solutions expedite processes in ways that manual records can not. An integrated inventory solution takes minimalistic approaches, such as Excel spreadsheets, and launches your capabilities into the stratosphere.

Best Practices in Chemical Inventory Management

Effective chemi
cal inventory management involves not only getting the right inventory in the right place at the right time in the right quantity, but also controlling the activities involved

The Cost of Chemical Management

Chemical inventory costs involve more than just the cost of the inventory itself; these costs include activities associated with management of that inventory. There are three components to chemical inventory management: management, procurement, and disposal.

A survey by Chemical Strategy Partnership entitled Chemical Management Services (CMS) Industry Report 2004 found that chemical management costs between $1.00 and $10.00 for every dollar of chemical purchased. This means that an organization purchasing $300,000 in chemicals also spends an additional $300,000 to $3 million managing those chemicals. These high costs are due to the hidden expenses required to manage those chemicals, such as compliance, safety, disposal and floor space.

You should be able to reduce the amount of chemicals purchased if you can determine where pockets of excess inventory exist, but the most important goal in this case is to gain control of the processes associated with chemical inventory management to achieve cost containment. An efficient solution can significantly lower your inventory management costs.

The CMS survey also found that organizations with an effective chemical inventory management solution reported net savings of 5%-20% in the first year of implementation. Over the first three years, most providers estimated a 5-10% savings per year or more.
